No theory here just the steps, the documents, and the things people get wrong. Three things must be in place before you can submit: a valid Non-B visa, a confirmed job offer from a registered Thai company, and confirmation your employer meets the 4:1 Thai-to-foreign ratio.
Step 1: Gather Your Personal Documents
- Passport (original + photocopies of data page, current visa stamp, entry stamp)
- Two passport photos (4cm x 6cm, white background, within 6 months)
- Educational credentials: degree or professional qualifications relevant to your job. Foreign documents may need certified Thai translation or apostille stamp.
- Completed work permit application form (available at the Department of Employment or their website)
- Medical certificate (Step 3 below)
Step 2: Your Employer Prepares Company Documents
This is primarily your employer's responsibility:
- Affidavit of company registration from the Department of Business Development (within 6 months)
- List of shareholders
- VAT registration certificate (Por Por 20)
- Financial statements (most recent balance sheet)
- Full employee list Thai and foreign with positions
- Withholding tax filings (Por Ngor Dor 1) showing Thai employees on payroll, confirming 4:1 ratio
- Workplace lease agreement
- Map of workplace location
Step 3: Get Your Medical Certificate
Visit any licensed Thai hospital or clinic. Tell them you need a work permit medical certificate. The standard check takes 30-60 minutes and screens for leprosy, tuberculosis, elephantiasis, drug addiction, and alcoholism. Cost: 500-1,500 THB depending on facility. The certificate must be dated within 3 months of your work permit submission. Any international hospital in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Phuket provides this service.
Step 4: Submit the Application
Work permit applications go to the Department of Employment office in the province where your workplace is located. Bangkok applications go to the office for your company's registered district. Your employer or their law firm typically submits on your behalf. The e-Work Permit online portal is available for many application types if you or your employer prefer the digital route.
Step 5: Receive Your Work Permit Booklet
Approved permits are typically ready within 7-14 working days. The booklet specifies your employer, job title, workplace address, and validity period. Keep it with you at your workplace at all times you are required to produce it on demand.
