The Non-O marriage visa is the most direct path to long-term residence if you are married to a Thai national. The financial threshold is lower than the retirement visa, there is no age requirement, and once established the annual renewal is a manageable administrative task.
Quick Facts
- Visa type: Non-Immigrant O (Marriage)
- Financial requirement: 400,000 THB deposit OR 40,000 THB/month income
- Annual extension fee: 1,900 THB
- Work rights: none without a separate work permit
- No age requirement
Who Qualifies?
- Legally married to a Thai national registered at a Thai district office (amphur) is the cleanest proof
- No age requirement (unlike retirement visa)
- Meets financial requirements
- No criminal history that would make you inadmissible to Thailand
Financial Requirements
Option 1: 400,000 THB Bank Deposit
400,000 THB (approximately USD 11,000) in a Thai bank account in your name. The same seasoning rules as the retirement visa apply: funds must be maintained at 400,000 THB for 2-3 months before your extension, and must not fall below this during the year.
Option 2: Monthly Income of 40,000 THB
Verified monthly income of 40,000 THB (approximately USD 1,100). Requires an income verification letter from your embassy. UK nationals cannot use this method the British Embassy stopped issuing these letters in 2019. Must use the bank deposit method instead.
Option 3: Combination
Combination of income and deposit: (monthly income × 12) + bank balance = 400,000 THB.

- Thai house registration (ทะเบียนบ้าน) copy
- Official Thai marriage certificate (ทะเบียนสมรส) certified copy
Marriage Certificate: Thai vs Foreign Registration
If married in Thailand at a district office: you have a Thai marriage certificate straightforward. If married abroad: your foreign certificate needs apostilling and certified translation into Thai. Allow several weeks and budget for translation costs. Start this process early if planning to use the marriage visa.
How to Apply
From Outside Thailand
Apply at a Thai consulate in your home country. Typically issued as a 90-day single-entry visa. Enter Thailand and convert to a 1-year permission at an immigration office within 90 days of arrival.
Annual Extension Inside Thailand
Extensions are annual at your local immigration office. The 1,900 THB fee is paid on the day. Many offices do not issue the full 1-year stamp immediately instead issuing a 30-day "under consideration" stamp with a follow-up visit required. Build this second visit into your schedule. Apply up to 30 days before your current permission expires.
Can You Work in Thailand on a Marriage Visa?
No. The marriage visa gives you the right to stay in Thailand, not to work. Working without a valid work permit carries serious consequences including fines, deportation, and re-entry bans. To work legally, you need a separate Non-B visa and work permit from a qualifying Thai employer. See the dedicated Can You Work guide.
