The Non-ED education visa allows you to live in Thailand while genuinely studying Thai language, Muay Thai, cooking, traditional arts, or a formal university degree. It is a legitimate long-term stay option used by tens of thousands of foreigners, and it is not a tourist visa extension disguised as study.

What Qualifies for a Non-ED Visa?
Thai Language Schools
The most common use. Registered Thai language schools in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and other cities sponsor ED visas regularly. Courses are typically flexible in schedule. Always verify the school's Ministry of Education registration before enrolling.
Muay Thai Academies
Qualifies but only at gyms with Ministry of Education registration. This is a formal process and not every gym has it. See the Muay Thai Education Visa guide for how to identify qualifying gyms and what to ask.
Universities
International students at Thai universities (Chulalongkorn, Mahidol, Chiang Mai University and others) hold Non-ED visas. The university's international student office handles the full process.
Other Approved Programmes
Thai cooking schools, traditional arts programmes, and some yoga/wellness institutions with Ministry of Education registration qualify. Verify directly with the institution before enrolling.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
- Find and enrol in an approved school. Confirm Ministry of Education registration and request a sample visa sponsorship letter. Pay any required deposit or enrolment fee.
- Apply at a Thai consulate. Submit your enrolment/acceptance letter, passport, financial proof, and application form. Processing: 3-7 working days.
- Enter Thailand and register your address. File TM30 within 24 hours of arriving at private accommodation (hotels do it automatically).
- Extend every 90 days. Your school issues an attendance certificate and updated enrolment confirmation. Take these to immigration with your passport and TM.7 form, pay 1,900 THB. Typically same-day processing.
Cost Breakdown
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Initial Non-ED visa (consulate) | USD 60-80 equivalent |
| 90-day extension (immigration) | 1,900 THB |
| Thai language school fees | 5,000-15,000 THB/month |
| Muay Thai academy fees | 8,000-30,000 THB/month |
| University tuition | Varies widely by programme |
| Re-entry permit (if travelling) | 1,000-3,800 THB |
Extending and Changing Schools
Extensions require current enrolment confirmation and attendance record from your school. If you want to change schools, coordinate timing carefully there must be no gap in enrolment. Visit immigration and explain the transfer. A seamless documented handover from old to new school is far better than any gap in coverage.
Is This Visa Right for You?
The ED visa makes sense if you want to genuinely study something while you settle into Thai life, or if you are a serious Muay Thai practitioner who trains for months at a time. It is less suitable for remote workers (use the DTV visa) or retirees aged 50+ (the retirement visa or LTR may suit better).
