Bangkok and Chiang Mai represent two very different visions of expat life in Thailand. Bangkok is urban, international, and more expensive. Chiang Mai is quieter, cooler, and considerably cheaper for equivalent quality. The right choice depends on how you work, how you travel, and what you value in daily life.

Rent: The Biggest Difference

Transport

Bangkok: Excellent public transport BTS Skytrain, MRT underground, river taxis. A monthly BTS pass runs around 1,500–1,800 THB. Grab is reliable and cheaper than taxis. Owning a car in Bangkok is expensive (parking, traffic) and generally not worth it unless you live outside the transit network.

Chiang Mai: No metro or sky train. A motorbike is the standard choice for most residents rental runs 2,500–4,000 THB per month for a scooter. Grab operates but coverage is less dense. Car ownership is more practical than in Bangkok. Transport costs in Chiang Mai are typically lower than Bangkok despite the lack of public transit.

Healthcare

Chiang Mai has good private hospitals Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai and others that handle most needs well. Choose Bangkok if: you need regular international travel connections; you value the widest choice of restaurants, entertainment, and services; you require specialist medical care; you work in finance, tech, or a sector with a Bangkok business hub; or you prefer the energy of a major metropolis.

Choose Chiang Mai if: you are prioritising lifestyle over career networking; you want to maximise your budget; you prefer a slower pace and a cooler climate for part of the year; you are a remote worker with no location obligations; or you are drawn to the arts, outdoor activities, and the Chiang Mai expat community specifically.

Many long-term expats do both a base in Chiang Mai with regular trips to Bangkok, or vice versa. The two cities are well-connected by cheap domestic flights (45 minutes, often under 1,000 THB) and an overnight train.
